IPTV Halifax: a guide that knows the game starts at 8, not 7

Nova Scotia split its hockey loyalties long before television, and the Maritime household with a Leafs fan, a Habs fan and a Bruins fan under one roof is not a joke here, it is Cole Harbour. The Leafs’ regional games are on Sportsnet Ontario and TSN 4, both included. The Canadiens’ regional games are on TSN 2 in English and RDS in French, with Sportsnet East carrying some, all included.

The Bruins are the honest limit: there is no Boston regional feed sold in Canada, so you get the Bruins when they are on Sportsnet, TSN, CBC or the American national broadcasts that reach a Canadian feed, which over a season is a lot of games but not all of them, and we would rather say that than promise NESN and disappoint you in October. Saturday’s Hockey Night in Canada on CBC and Sportsnet covers all three teams’ national dates, and the playoffs move to Sportsnet and TSN nationally.

The Mooseheads at the Scotiabank Centre are the city’s own team, and the QMJHL games that TSN, RDS or Eastlink Community TV pick up, mostly rivalry nights against Moncton and Cape Breton and the playoff rounds, are on the service. The league’s own paid stream is not, and no IPTV service that says otherwise is being straight with you. Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s football and basketball follow the same pattern.

The sports the city adopted from elsewhere are easier. The Blue Jays are almost entirely Sportsnet East. The Raptors split TSN and Sportsnet One. The NFL is CTV, TSN and the US network feeds, with the Patriots following the same Boston line as the Bruins. Premier League is on Sportsnet and the UK feeds, which matters on a Saturday morning when it is already 8:30 here. Pro plan subscribers add UFC and boxing PPV, which is what Argyle Street puts on the screens.

Yes, on both, and on the resellers that run over their lines. The service needs about 15 Mbps per screen for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K. Bell Aliant’s fibre in Halifax and Dartmouth is among the best connections we test on anywhere in the country, and it has been in the ground longer than Bell’s fibre in most of Ontario. Eastlink cable works well in the city and its fibre in the newer subdivisions in Bedford, Hammonds Plains and Fall River is comparable. No VPN is needed on either. If you run one for other reasons, pick a Halifax or at least a Canadian server, or the guide may quietly switch to Eastern time.

The Halifax-specific problems are wood, water and weather. Older houses in the south end and Dartmouth’s downtown have thick walls and modems on the wrong floor; a powerline adapter or a $15 Ethernet adapter on a Firestick fixes that outright. The new towers on the waterfront and in Clayton Park have the usual condo issue of too many routers on 2.4 GHz, which the 5 GHz band cures.

Homes out toward Prospect and along the Eastern Shore on fixed wireless or older rural DSL are the honest limit: test on the free trial before you pay, on your worst Wi-Fi spot, at 8 pm on a game night.
