- EPG is the TV guide. It comes as a separate file of listings, usually in a format called XMLTV, and your app pairs it with the channel list.
- Sign in with an Xtream login and the guide arrives automatically. An M3U link sometimes needs the guide address added by hand.
- “EPG not available for this channel” means the app found no listings to match that one channel. The channel itself still plays.
- Wrong times are nearly always the device’s time zone setting. Canada has six time zones, including Newfoundland’s half-hour.
What does EPG mean?
EPG is short for electronic programme guide, and people also call it the TV guide, the channel guide or just the listings. In TiviMate it is the grid you scroll through with the remote. In IPTV Smarters it is the programme strip under each channel, plus a full guide view. Without it the app still plays channels, but you are flicking blind, with no way to see that the game starts at seven or that a film is halfway through.
The guide also drives catch-up. Past programmes can only be replayed if the app knows when they started and ended, and that timing comes from the listings. When the guide is empty, catch-up on that channel usually disappears with it.
How does the guide get into your IPTV app?
IPTV sends channels and listings separately, and the app joins them. The listings file almost always uses XMLTV, which its own project describes as a file format for describing TV listings and a contract between the programs that produce guide data and the programs that use it. Each programme in the file carries a channel identifier, a title, and a start and end time with a time zone offset.
The channel list carries its own identifier for each channel. When the two match, the listings slot into place under the right channel. That matching step explains nearly every guide problem people run into. The channel plays because the stream is fine. The guide stays blank because nothing in the listings file carries that channel’s identifier.
How do I add EPG to my IPTV app?
How much you have to do depends on how you signed in.
With an Xtream login: nothing to add
If you entered a username, password and server address, the app asks the same server for the guide, and it downloads by itself. That covers TiviMate, IPTV Smarters and most other players. The first download of a large guide takes a few minutes, so a blank grid for the first few minutes after setup is normal. Leave the app open on the guide screen and it fills in.
With an M3U link: sometimes you add it yourself
An M3U link is a plain list of channels. Some apps read the guide address from inside the list, and some need it typed into a separate field. Look in the playlist settings for something called EPG source, EPG URL or TV guide URL, and paste the guide address your provider gives you. If you have both an M3U link and an Xtream login, the easier fix is to switch to Xtream and let the app handle it.
After adding it: refresh
Apps refresh the guide on a schedule, usually once a day. If you have just added a source, or the guide looks stale, use the update or refresh option in the app’s EPG settings. Then give it a couple of minutes before judging.
Why does my IPTV say “EPG not available for this channel”?
It means the app found no listings to match that channel. The channel is working, and only the guide for it is missing. There are four usual reasons, and they are worth checking in this order.
The guide has not downloaded yet. On a new setup, or right after the app refreshed, give it a few minutes. If every channel is blank, this is almost certainly the cause.
The channel has no listings to give. Pay-per-view event channels, round-the-clock loops and some international feeds simply have no schedule. A blank guide on those is expected.
The identifiers do not match. If most channels have a guide and a handful of popular ones do not, the provider’s list and the listings file disagree about those channels’ identifiers. You cannot fix that from the app. Tell your provider which channels are affected, because the mapping is theirs to correct.
The guide address is missing. This happens with M3U links in apps that do not read the guide address automatically. Add it in the playlist settings, or switch to the Xtream login.
Why are the EPG times wrong?
Listings carry their times with an offset, and the app converts them to the time on your device. So when the whole guide is shifted by an hour or three, the device’s clock or time zone is usually wrong, not the listings. Fix it at the device first. On a Firestick that is Settings, then Preferences, then Time Zone. On Android TV and Google TV it is in the system date and time settings. Restart the app afterwards.
This matters more in Canada than in most countries, because we span six time zones: Newfoundland, Atlantic, Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific. A 7 pm Eastern puck drop shows at 4 pm in Vancouver and 8 pm in Halifax. In St. John’s it is 8:30 pm, because Newfoundland runs half an hour off everyone else. Some players offer a manual guide shift in whole hours, and that setting cannot express the half hour. Newfoundland users should set the device’s time zone to St. John’s and leave any app-level shift at zero.
One more cause catches people once a year. If the guide is off by exactly one hour for a week or two in March or November, the device probably missed a daylight saving change. Turn automatic time on, or set it again.
EPG in TiviMate and in IPTV Smarters
In TiviMate the guide is the main screen, so problems show up quickly. With an Xtream playlist it loads on its own. With an M3U playlist, open the playlist’s settings and check that a guide source is attached. The EPG settings also let you force an update. Our TiviMate setup guide covers the login side.
In IPTV Smarters, the guide appears under each channel and in the full TV guide view. With the Xtream login it downloads by itself. If it stays empty after a few minutes, check the settings for a refresh option before reinstalling anything. See our Smarters guide for that app’s setup on each device.
Frequently asked questions
What is EPG in IPTV?
EPG means electronic programme guide. It is the TV guide in your IPTV app, showing what is on each channel now and later. It arrives as a separate listings file that the app matches to your channels.
What does EPG stand for?
Electronic programme guide, spelled electronic program guide in American usage. On a cable box it is simply the guide.
What does “EPG not available for this channel” mean?
The app found no listings for that channel. The channel still plays. Usually the guide has not downloaded yet, the channel has no schedule, or its identifier does not match the listings file.
How do I add an EPG URL?
With an Xtream login you do not need to, because the guide downloads by itself. With an M3U link, paste your provider’s guide address into the playlist’s EPG source field, then refresh the guide.
Why is my IPTV guide showing the wrong time?
Usually the device’s own time zone or clock is wrong. Fix it in the device settings, then restart the app. Newfoundland users should set St. John’s time, because app-level shifts often only move in whole hours.
Do I need EPG for catch-up?
Yes. Catch-up relies on the guide to know when each programme started and ended, so channels without listings usually lose catch-up as well.
